Update on Volkswagen Diesel Fraud Case

We filed an action in Butte County on May 17, 2018 with the intent of having a jury decide punitive damages. We would be the first party to bring the defeat device case to jury trial.  Peer reviewed studies proved thousands of people with lung diseases died from the fraud.

Herd Mentality will End your Business

Local cannabis celebrity John Ford is accused of scamming folks by convincing them to pay for bogus insurance called Ford20 Insurance. Ford20 Insurance was a Founding Member of the Humboldt Cannabis Chamber of Commerce.

I informed all my clients not to pay John Ford money. After representing business clients for 12 year smelling a con-artist was easy.

Local Cannabis Celebrity John Ford

Some folks were not so fortunate. Humboldt Redwood Healing (Thomas Mulder CEO) paid John Ford $52,100 for workers comp insurance for 3 trimmers. Certainly, John Ford needs to be ran out of town but paying this joker $52,100 was a bonehead mistake. Although a lawsuit has been filed by Paul Gallegos it is likely the $52,100 is lost and gone forever. Civil trials take 5-6 years to go to jury in Humboldt and John Ford appears to be judgment proof (financially ruined).

The average cost of workers' comp insurance in California is $1.85 for every $100 of wages paid. Using these averages it appears Humboldt Redwood Healing intended to pay each trimmer over $1.7 million dollars in wages per year.

Local media turned John Ford into a celebrity. On February 20, 2016, the Times Standard ran an article promoting John Ford's services to consumers authored by Jon Chiv. (The same month Humboldt Redwood Healing was swindled).

I immediately wrote the editor at the time, Kimberly Wear, demanding that the story be retracted because small businesses were in danger. Ms. Wear ignored my concerns regarding the native advertisement. After complaining to the owners of the Times Standard Digital First Media (located in Denver, Colorado), Ms. Wear resigned.

I learned over a decade ago, most independent insurance agents are to be avoided. Networking with them is a rookie mistake. Businesses are better off buying insurance from solvent companies who hire and train their agents. You also want to deal with established insurance companies so you can sue and get your money back if you don't receive the services promised. John Ford's bond was only $10,000.

It is amateur hour in Humboldt. People who lack integrity and business experience are in a mad rush to profit off local businesses.

The businesses who were scammed have herd mentality. Like sheep they follow the herd to make all their decisions. These businesses are naive and will fail unless they grow up fast.
